RRB Technician Vacancy 2026
Total vacancies in RRB Technician 2026 are 6565. Out of these, there are 323 Technician Grade I Signal and 6242 Technician Grade III posts. This is approximately 5.2% higher than the 6,238 vacancies announced in the last cycle, CEN 02/2025, with Grade I Signal posts alone increasing by over 76%.
| Category | CEN 02/2025 | CEN 02/2026 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Technician Grade I Signal | 183 | 323 | +140 posts (about +76.5%) |
| Technician Grade III | 6,055 | 6,242 | +187 posts (about +3.1%) |
| Total | 6,238 | 6,565 | +327 posts (about +5.2%) |
This year-on-year leap is important for two reasons. First, it shows that Grade I Signal, the smaller and better-paying post, has opened up many more vacancies than last time, which is good news if you have a B.Sc, diploma or engineering degree. Second, the 5.2% overall increase means a little less competition pressure even with a high-demand exam like Technician, for a flat or declining vacancy trend.
Technician Grade I Signal vs Grade III: Which One Should You Apply For?
If you have a B.Sc, diploma or engineering degree in electronics, electrical, computer science, IT or instrumentation, apply for Grade I Signal which pays more (Pay Level 5) but has only 323 seats. If you have passed 10th with ITI, you can apply for Grade III. There are total 6,242 seats in Pay Level 2. If you qualify for both you can apply to both separately
| Point of comparison | Grade I Signal | Grade III |
|---|---|---|
| Qualification needed | B.Sc / 3-year Diploma / Engineering Degree in Electronics, Electrical, CS, IT or Instrumentation | 10th + ITI (NCVT/SCVT) or CCAA in the relevant trade; some Signal & Telecom posts accept 10+2 with Physics and Maths |
| Pay level and initial pay | Level 5, Rs 29,200 | Level 2, Rs 19,900 |
| Age limit (as on 1 July 2026) | 18 to 33 years | 18 to 30 years |
| Vacancies (CEN 02/2026) | 323 | 6,242 |
| Typical competition | Fewer seats, but a smaller pool of B.Sc/Diploma/Degree holders applies | Many more seats, but a much larger pool of ITI holders applies |
Can you apply for both? Yes, provided you meet the qualifications and age criteria for each post separately. You will have to register for two different online applications, pay two different fees and sit two different CBTs, one for each pay level.

Educational qualification: Technician Grade I Signal
- B.Sc in Physics, Electronics, Computer Science, IT or Instrumentation as main subject.
- OR a 3-year full-time Diploma in Electronics, Electrical, Instrumentation, Computer Science or IT (or a recognised combination of these streams).
- OR an Engineering Degree (B.E. / B.Tech) in the same technical streams.
Educational qualification: Technician Grade III
- Class 10th pass with ITI certificate from NCVT or SCVT in relevant trade such as Fitter, Electrician, Welder, Machinist, Diesel Mechanic, Painter, Carpenter or Refrigeration & AC Mechanic.
- OR Matric with Course Completed Apprentice Act (CCAA) in the relevant trade.
- 10+2 with Physics and Mathematics is only accepted for Technician Grade III Signal & Telecommunication (S&T) posts and not for other Grade III trades.
Important: Diploma or Degree does NOT replace ITI for most Grade III posts
Technician Grade III trades are not open to Diploma or Engineering Degree holder as they specifically look for ITI or CCAA. This confusion is among the most common causes of application rejection at the Document Verification stage.
Before you apply, please always refer to Annexure A of the detailed CEN for the exact qualification listed against your chosen trade. There are certain specific posts where Diploma or Degree may be an alternative but that is the exception and not the rule.
Also note: Candidates appearing in the final year are not eligible to apply. You must have the qualifying certificate on the closing date of the application
Medical and Vision Standards
The Four medical standards of RRB Technician posts are: A-3, B-1, B-2 and C-1. A-3 is the strictest and is applicable to safety critical posts like Technician Track Machine. B-1 is applicable to most Grade I Signal posts and allows for lenses up to 4D power. The most relaxed is C-1, which does not require a colour vision test. Therefore, some C-1 posts are suitable for colour blind candidates. Here is what each one code actually means in plain language.
| Standard | Distance vision required | Glasses allowed | Colour vision test | Typically used for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A-3 | 6/9 and 6/9, with or without glasses (power not more than 2D) | Yes, within 2D | Required | Safety-critical posts such as Technician Track Machine |
| B-1 | 6/9 and 6/12, with or without glasses (power not more than 4D) | Yes, within 4D | Required | Most Grade I Signal posts |
| B-2 | Slightly relaxed version of B-1 | Yes | Required | Several Grade III posts |
| C-1 | 6/12 and 6/18, with or without glasses | Yes | Not required | Posts open to colour-blind candidates |
Can I apply if I wear glasses or had LASIK surgery?
Yes, you can wear glasses under B-1, B-2 and C-1 standards within the allowed power, but if you have had LASIK or similar vision correction eye surgery, you are generally considered medically unfit for positions that require the A-3 medical standard. If you require glasses to correct your eyesight and your power falls within the permitted limit for the standard of your post, you are still eligible.
In case you have undergone LASIK, you must check the medical standard listed against your particular trade in Annexure A of the detailed CEN before applying. The reason being, A-3 posts will reject LASIK candidates at the medical stage even if they clear the CBT.
In case you have undergone LASIK, you must check the medical standard listed against your particular trade in Annexure A of the detailed CEN before applying. The reason being, A-3 posts will reject LASIK candidates at the medical stage even if they clear the CBT.
- To meet A-3 and B-1 standards, you must pass the distance vision test and colour vision, night vision and binocular vision tests.
- C-1 posts do not require colour vision. This is good news for colour blind candidates who are otherwise medically fit.
- Detailed medical standards for each post will be mentioned in Annexure A of the detailed CEN. For complete rules, refer to Chapter 5 of the Indian Railway Medical Manual (IRMM) Volume

| SC / ST / Ex-servicemen / PwBD / Female / Transgender / Minorities / EBC | Rs 250 | Full Rs 250 refunded after appearing in CBT |
RRB Technician Selection Process 2026
RRB Technician selection process consists of three stages namely a single Computer Based Test (CBT), Document Verification (DV) and Medical Examination. There is no psycho test (CBAT) and no interview, unlike the RRB ALP exam.
Stage 1: Computer Based Test (CBT)
- 100 questions of 100 marks to be solved in 90 minutes.
- 1/3 mark will be deducted for each incorrect answer.
- Normalisation of marks is applied when the CBT is conducted in multiple shifts.
- Qualifying Marks: 40% for UR/EWS, 30% for OBC, 30% for SC and 25% for ST candidates with 2% relaxation for PwBD candidates.
Stage 2: Document Verification (DV)
- Shortlisting ratio: Candidates are being shortlisted for DV in the ratio of 1:1 of vacancies, RRB-wise, on the basis of CBT merit. This is a tighter ratio compared to exams like RRB JE or NTPC which generally call a larger multiple of the vacancy number so a strong CBT score really matters here.
- At DV your application is verified against original certificates for age, qualification, category and identity.
- Any discrepancy between your application and your original documents may lead to rejection even after clearing the CBT.
Stage 3: Medical Examination (ME)
- Candidates must be medically fit in the prescribed medical standard, A-3, B-1, B-2 or C-1 for the post they have applied for.
- Medical test is conducted by Railway Administration doctors which includes vision, hearing and general fitness tests.
- In case two or more candidates get equal marks in CBT, the candidate who is older in age will be given preference in the merit list.

RRB Technician vs ALP vs JE vs Group D
RRB has a series of technical-cadre exams. Technician Grade III and ALP are similar, both being Pay Level 2. JE is one step higher, at Pay Level 6, for both diploma and degree holders. Group D is the basic Pay Level 1 post, and only a 10th pass is required. The exam you choose will mainly depend on your qualification and how much competition you are ready to face.
| Exam | Qualification | Pay level (initial pay) | Age limit | Recent vacancies | Extra selection stage |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Technician Grade I Signal | B.Sc / Diploma / Degree | Level 5 (Rs 29,200) | 18-33 | 323 | None, single CBT |
| Technician Grade III | 10th + ITI / CCAA | Level 2 (Rs 19,900) | 18-30 | 6,242 | None, single CBT |
| RRB ALP | 10th + ITI / Diploma | Level 2 (Rs 19,900) | 18-30 | 11,127 | CBAT (aptitude test) |
| RRB JE | Diploma / Degree in Engineering | Level 6 (Rs 35,400) | 18-33 | 2,585 | Two CBTs (screening + merit) |
| RRB Group D | 10th pass / ITI / NAC | Level 1 (Rs 18,000) | 18-33 | 22,195 | Physical Efficiency Test (PET) |
Think of it this way. Group D and ALP have the largest applicant pools because the bar of qualification is lowest. JE has the least number of vacancies but the syllabus is tougher and more technical. Technician is somewhere in between. Technician itself has competitive Grade III like ALP and smaller pay Grade I Signal for diploma and degree holders.
