RRB vs RRC: What is the Difference?

There is a lot of confusion between RRB and RRC by many students. They are both recruitment organizations of Indian Railways, albeit in different categories of posts. This difference will make you know what board to apply to. In easy terms, to be a Loco Pilot or NTPC officer or only a Junior Engineer, will require an application through RRB.

To work at a position as high as the Track Maintainer or the Pointsman, try applying to RRC (this test is also referred to as RRB Group D). The number of RRBs and RRCs is 21 and 16, respectively, distributed among various cities of India.

    RRB Selection Process 2026

There are differences in the selection process of RRB recruitment based on the post. Most examinations are conducted in multi-stage examination, which ensures that the only good candidates are recruited. The following is the process involved to the big railway exams:

    RRB NTPC Selection Process.

    • Stage 1: CBT 1: A screening test with 100 questions in 90 minutes. However, the candidates who pass CBT 1 can proceed to Stage 2.
    • Stage 2: CBT 2: A more advanced test with 120 questions in 90 minutes. According to the marks of CBT 2, shortlisting of the next stage is issued.
    • Stage 3: Skill Test / CBAT / Typing Test: This will be determined by the post. The candidates of Station Master pass a Computer-Based Aptitude Test (CBAT). A Typing Test is needed in Clerk positions. However, these exams are only qualifying in nature, which means the marks scored in them are not included in the final merit list.
    • Stage 4: Document Checking: The authenticity of documents is checked.
    • Stage 5: Medical Examination: Candidates will be required to meet the standards of medical fitness provided by the Railway Board.

    RRB Group D Selection Process

    • Stage 1: Computer-Based Test (CBT): 100 questions, 90 minutes.
    • Stage 2: Physical Efficiency Test (PET): Tests physical fitness by using tasks that involve weight carrying and running.
    • Stage 3: Document Checking and Health Check.

RRB JE and ALP Selection Process

    • Both exams include 2 stages of CBT process (CBT 1 and CBT 2).
    • RRB ALP also incorporates Computer-Based Aptitude Test (AT).
    • Final selection is based on CBT 2 performance, it is subject to clearing all other stages.
Note: Final selection in all RRB exams is based on merit. The most important step is to pass the CBT exam. However, all stages after CBT, PET, CBAT, and Typing Test are qualifying in nature and do not add to your marks.

    RRB 2026 Exam Pattern

It is highly important to understand the pattern of the railway exam, so that you can plan how to study. Every railway recruitment exam is of a different type depending on the type of post. • Free or exceptionally subsidised railway passes for self and family members.
    • Medical facilities at Railway hospitals and dispensaries
    • Pension under the National Pension System (NPS).
    • Annual increment and career development based on departmental exams and promotions.
The greater the pay level the more allowances you get. A Station Master or a Junior Engineer in-hand would earn significantly more than a Group D or a UG level NTPC employee, but the competition is also much higher to those posts.

How to Start Railway Exam Preparation

Having a clear plan makes it easier to get started with your exam prep. First of all understand the syllabus and exam pattern, and then build strong basics in Mathematics and Reasoning. Study regularly. Revise often. Focus on consistent practice and improve your performance

Here is a practical step-by-step preparation strategy:

    1. Get to know the railway exam pattern and syllabus well before you begin your studies. Know which subjects have more marks.
    2. Begin with NCERT books of General Science and General Awareness papers to have a good base.
    3. Solve previous-year question papers to know question trends.
    4. Solve Mathematics problems daily, particularly percentage, ratio, time-work and simplification.
    5. Practice daily grammar exercises for General Awareness
    6. After studying each chapter, try topic-wise quizzes to test your understanding.
    7. Once you have covered the entire syllabus, start taking full-length mock tests in exam conditions.
    8. Review the results of each mock test. Find areas that are weak and study those topics again. And attempt live tests for real exam experience
Consistency is the key to crack any Railway Exam. 3–4 hours of dedicated daily preparation for 3–4 months is enough for Group D as well as NTPC, if you follow the right plan.
