The IBPS SO Mains Exam tests Professional Knowledge based on the post you have applied for such as IT Officer, Law Officer, Marketing Officer, or other Specialist Officer posts. The Professional Knowledge paper is the most crucial stage of the exam as the final merit list is prepared using the Mains Professional Knowledge score and Interview marks in the ratio of 80:20.

    IBPS PO Mains Descriptive Paper

The descriptive paper in IBPS SO Mains consists of 2 questions for 25 marks to be solved in 30 minutes. For most posts it is a general English writing test e.g. essay, letter or précis. For Rajbhasha Adhikari, it is a translation paper between Hindi and English.
Essay or letter writing: practise within the 30-minute limit, keep a clear introduction, body and conclusion, and stick to banking or general current-affairs themes.
Translation paper (Rajbhasha Adhikari): Practice on banking and financial vocabulary as passages are often finance or policy-themed.
This is a descriptive paper which is qualitative only. It does not add to your merit score but you need to clear its minimum standard to remain in the process.

What's New in the IBPS SO 2026 Pattern

The biggest change in IBPS SO exam pattern 2026 is that Professional Knowledge which was earlier a Mains only test is now also a part of Prelims. Prelims questions have come down from 150 to 100 and duration has come down from 120 minutes to 80 minutes.
FeatureEarlier Pattern (up to CRP SPL-XV)IBPS SO 2026 Pattern (CRP SPL-XVI)
    Prelims questions150100
    Prelims total marks125125
    Prelims duration120 minutes80 minutes
Prelims sections3 (English, Reasoning, Quant/GA)4 (adds Professional Knowledge)
    Mains objective paper60 questions, 60 marks, 45 minutes (Rajbhasha Adhikari: 45 questions)150 questions, 200 marks, 125 minutes
Mains descriptive paperCompulsory only for Rajbhasha Adhikari2 questions, 25 marks, 30 minutes for applicable posts
    Total Mains marksAbout 60225
This means candidates now have to start Professional Knowledge preparation from day one rather than doing it after Prelims. Looking at the last few cycles the IBPS SO exam pattern has changed from a pure aptitude based Prelims screening (CRP SPL-XIV and XV) to a pattern where domain knowledge is tested at both the stages (CRP SPL-XVI, 2026). The change is a reflection of IBPS wanting to filter out serious, job-ready specialist candidates earlier in the process, rather than just relying on generic Reasoning, English and Quant scores at the screening stage.
