Best Government Jobs After Graduation in India 2026 – Exams, Salary & Tips
Looking for government jobs after graduation? 2026 is full of opportunities in Civil Services, SSC, Banking, Railways and PSUs.

Applications are open to any graduate with entry level salaries starting at 35,000 offering strong career growth and job security. SSC CGL, IBPS PO can be cleared in a year. UPSC, RBI Grade B requires more in-depth preparation.
The key to success is to choose the right exam based on your goals, plan the syllabus as early as possible and stay consistent with mock tests, revision and previous year papers.

Why Choose Government Jobs After Graduation?

But the private sector has its attractions. Good salary early on, fast-paced work, and flexibility. But here is what no private firm can match:

Job security: Once you pass the exam and probation, your job is secure – no layoffs, no restructuring, no pink slips subject to market forces.

Salary that keeps growing without negotiation:
7th Pay Commission set up pay scales from ₹18,000 (Level 1) to ₹2,50,000 (Cabinet Secretary). Salary that continues to grow without negotiation. Add DA, HRA, TA and allowances and your gross package often crosses basic pay by 40-60%. Plus, the 8th Pay Commission (effective January 2026) is likely to push salaries 25–34% higher.

Work-life balance: Fixed hours, earned leave, casual leave, maternity/paternity leave and national holidays are the norm and not the exception in government.
Pension and retirement benefits: The National Pension System (NPS) covers most of the central government employees who were recruited after 2004. The old pension scheme (OPS) still exists for older posts in state government. And either way you ain't retiring on nothing.

Best Government Jobs After Graduation Sector-Wise

UPSC Civil Services (IAS, IPS, IFS, IRS)

Ask any parent in India what government job they want for their child and 9 out of 10 will say IAS. It's not just emotion, there's something behind that. The UPSC CSE has three stages - Prelims (objective - two papers), Mains (descriptive - 9 papers) and Personality Test (Interview).

All services have approximately 1,100 vacancies advertised each year. Starting salary is ₹56,100 at Pay Level 10 but the total package is incomparable due to the perks official bungalow, vehicle, staff, medical facilities and social authority.

SSC CGL - Best for Fast Entry

For most graduates who want a central government job without 3 years wait, SSC CGL is the most sensible starting point. The exam is for 2 tiers and for recruitment in 60+ post types Income Tax Inspector, CBI Sub-Inspector, Auditor, Assistant Section Officer (MEA) and more.

Pay Scale: Rs. 35,400 to 1,12,400 (Pay Level 6 to 8). Selection within 10-12 months of intimation. It is open for the graduates of any stream that BA, B.Com and B.Sc students all gets the equal opportunity to compete. Syllabus: Quantitative Aptitude, English, General Awareness and Reasoning – No Domain Knowledge Needed.

Banking - IBPS PO, SBI PO, RBI Grade B

SBI PO: has more competition than IBPS PO less vacancies, tougher exam and group discussion round which is not there in IBPS. But if you are a serious aspirant for banking then the extra effort is worth it for SBI’s brand, salary structure and career growth.

IBPS PO: Common selection process for Probationary Officers in 11 public sector banks Basic Pay after 12th Bipartite Settlement – Rs. 48,480/month Gross Salary after 12th Bipartite Settlement – Around Rs. 80,437/month This is a huge jump from what banking jobs provided a few years back.

RBI Grade B: Basic Pay starting at ₹78,450 with gross package of approximately ₹1,50,374/month. The exam is hard (think Economics, Finance, Management papers on a master’s level), but the reward is commensurate with the effort. B.Com graduates have a definite edge in the finance papers.

Indian Railways - RRB NTPC & Group D

The RRB NTPC is the entry point of Indian Railways at graduate level, which is the largest single employer in India. Graduate posts under NTPC are Station Master, Traffic Assistant, Commercial Apprentice and Goods Guard, all of which are Pay Level 6 (₹35,400 base + allowances including free railway passes).

RRB NTPC usually releases 25,000-35,000+ vacancies per notification and is one of the most accessible government jobs after graduation in terms of number of seats available. Exam Pattern: CBT 1 (Screening) CBT 2 (Merit) Typing/Skill Test.

PSU Jobs via GATE (Best for Engineers)

BHEL, ONGC, NTPC, GAIL, IOCL are some of the good companies where you can get entry level CTC ₹8-18 LPA, ONGC and IOCL at the higher end.

GATE scores are valid for 3 years. So, you get multiple PSU application cycles out of one attempt. This is the most lucrative government career path for B.Tech graduates straight out of graduation no other route comes close in pure salary numbers.

    Defence - CDS, AFCAT

CDS is for all stream graduates and leads to entry of commissioned officer in Army, Navy and Air Force through SSB. AFCAT covers both technical and non-technical officer posts in Air Force.

Pay Level 10 entry - same as IAS plus military service pay, field allowances and free accommodation. Age limit: 19-25 years for most of the streams. For those who balance academics and fitness, officer roles offer a career path that the civilian sector can’t match.

Teaching - CTET, KVS, NVS, DSSSB

If you have a B.Ed and love working with students, then central government teaching jobs offer great stability. There are levels of PRT (Primary), TGT (Trained Graduate Teacher) and PGT (Post Graduate Teacher) in KVS (Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan), NVS (Navodaya Vidyalaya) and DSSSB (Delhi).

If you clear CTET (Conducted by CBSE, twice in a year, certificate is now valid for life) you can apply whenever vacancies open. Salary: ₹35,000-₹70,000 per month (varies by state, level and institution)
